Spring 2003: Edmondstown’s Big Makeover

To say that "Edmondstown Golf Club has had a makeover"  does no justice to the extent of the changes, renovations and vast improvements which have come over this Club in the last two years.

Edmondstown lies on the slopes of the Dublin Hills, a mile or so beyond the village of Ballyboden.  It is an 18 hole course, which started off life way back in 1944 as a nine hole affair etched out of a farm, and which has kept growing ever since.

Members regard its location as one of the great advantages of the club.  And guests to the club will find that since it lies only some seven miles from the centre of Dublin City, it takes little time to get there by taxi or by car.

Visitors are important to the Club and not only because they bring green fees in. Edmondstown has always prided itself on being a friendly club, eager to make those who want an 18-hole game on a superb course welcome and to ensure that they enjoy their day out.

Now the Club has a new course to challenge visitors.  Forced into action by the arrival nearby of a motorway, the Club decided to go the whole hog, redesigning all the holes and installing 18 new sand-based greens.  This meant a year of suffering for members while the diggers got their way, but the end result has justified the pain endured.

The Course can be as hard as the low handicappers want it to be, or it can provide stimulus and an ever-changing challenge for the rest of us. A computerised program has brought clarity to the indices while doing nothing to make the course less demanding.

And what better end to a day’s golf than a stint in our bar and dining room, all managed by expert staff who are familiar with the ways of golfers?

Edmondstown, therefore, is well worth a visit.  Playing golf on a modern course is exciting; playing it amid the scenic beauty of the Dublin Hills puts some icing on the cake. And who knows- the visitor might even break par!
